What would you do if you didn't have anyone to turn to?
What would you do if people didn't want to help you?
Over the past week, our staff worked very closely with a young man we will call Mike. He was under a lot of pressure as his partner was sick and struggling. People at the hospital weren't treating him and his partner well because they are young and considered to be "at-risk" youth.
How would you feel if the people who were there to help you didn't seem to care? (I've met enough people in health care to know that they probably did care, but that message didn't come across.)
Our staff member decided she was going to go the extra mile for Mike. She spent many hours (during office hours and outside of them) to help Mike through the situation and to be there for him. He was upset, unsure, scared...
During the most difficult part of the situation he turned to our staff member and said, 'You'll learn to like me..."
I wonder how many times he and his partner have been told that they aren't liked or welcome. What would you do if you felt that?
Mike and his partner got through this crisis! We gave them a care package of blankets, food items and a gift card.
Last night, our staff member got a short but sweet text from Mike. "Thanks for what you did."!!!
